Vilafamés offers a rich history, to be seen in the Cova de Dalt del Tossal de la Font, a site where anthropological remains were found, 80000 years old, or in Cova Matutano with remains dating from the Upper Paleolithic. The churches in the town are also noteworthy.
The old town centre is a walk through the history of this inland location in Castellón. We can find two different zones: the upper zone, characterized by narrow winding streets, and the lower zone where the streets are straighter, adapted to the lay of the land.
Among the buildings and monuments, the church of the Assumption (XVI century) stands out. It offers remarkable artworks from the XVII century, including the altarpiece, works by J. Oliet in the Communion Chapel, as well as ornaments, precious metalwork and bases in Valencian ceramics.
The chapel of St Michael (XVIII) ia also worth a visit, and you will probably be surprised by the instability of the ¨Roca Grossa¨, a huge red rock which figures among the photos taken by most tourists who visit this beautiful town.
The Castle is undoubtedly one of the most significant monuments here. It was built on the rock and has been altered several times over the years. Even a bird´s-eye view of the Castle is impressive.
This fort is at the top of the town where there are documented signs of the former population, and whose use is of Andaluz origin. The Castle has retained its original structure, as well as Roman, Islamic and Christian remains, the oldest traces dating from XIV century.
Its modern appearance dates from XIX century during the Carlist Wars, when the central circular tower was built. This is one of the few examples of Carlist architecture in the Community of Valencia.
The Museum of Contemporary Art of Vilafamés Vicente Aguilera Cerni is one of the most important among museums in the Community of Valencia. It is located in the historic town centre in a XVIII building which has been reformed to house the spectacular collection of contemporary art exhibited.
The museum collection contains more than 500 artworks, ranging from painting and sculpture to photographs and videos. Among the artists represented in the collection we can find Joan Miró, Antonio Tapiés, Eduardo Chillida, Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dalí as well as many others.
The museum offers a wide variety of temporary and permanent exhibitions, a unique experience for visitors.
They also organize workshops and educational activities for both children and adults on a regular basis, as well as conferences and talks on contemporary art.
The newly- created Berreby Museum is yet another indication of the artistic and cultural life of Vilafamés. Here we can see part of the personal collection of Eli- Georges Berreby – painter, writer, sculptor, man of the theatre.
We can also visit Trafic DÁrt, the studio and gallery where Jesus Lopez and Amparo Dominguez work. This space contains the considerable production of these artists, and some exclusive events.

In the 2023 Blue Flag Awards, Castellón received a total of 32, one more than last year thanks to the town of Almenara retaking its historical award for its Casablanca beach.
In 2023, Almassora has kept its Blue Flag for Benafeli beach for the last 2 years.
With an extremely high rate of Blue Flags among the towns, Castellón is home to some of the most sustainability-conscious towns regarding the quality of their beaches.
